Our Story & Legacy

Our story began right here in Hickory, North Carolina, back in 1981, when our father, John Dunn, and his business partner at the time, Dan McCall, brought a dream to reality and started SunLife during the solar energy boom. What started as a small solar and sunroom business quickly grew as customers began asking for ways to bring more light, comfort, and enjoyment to their homes.

Before long, SunLife Sunrooms, Spas & More expanded to Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and even Raleigh – helping homeowners, businesses, and churches all across the Carolinas and beyond. From Bojangles, McDonald’s, and Wendy’s restaurants to hospital, university, and school expansions, SunLife’s craftsmanship could be seen throughout the Southeast.

When the housing market tightened in the late 2000s, we made the choice to refocus on what mattered most, our local customers and community. We consolidated operations back to Hickory, reopened in Boone, and strengthened our foundation as the Carolinas’ oldest and largest Sunroom and Spa company.

In 2023, a new chapter began when John completed a buy-out agreement with his children, Sharon Dunn Grindstaff and Dave Dunn, officially passing the torch to the next generation.

Though John isn’t fully retired (and we’re thankful for that!), he continues to be part of the team, mentoring us and sharing the wisdom that has guided this company for over 45 years.

As Sharon says, “We’re so excited to carry on the legacy Daddy began when we were so young. We’ve worked hard, but we also realize how fortunate we are – from our coworkers who take pride in their work, to our loyal customers, our vendors, and our community. We see you, we appreciate you, and we’re grateful for your support.”

And as Dave adds, “We’re not such a small business anymore, and we’re proud of that – but we still operate with the same family values that started it all.”

Four and a half decades later, that’s still what defines SunLife – family, pride, and community.

Our Team & Family

We like to say that SunLife isn’t just family-owned – it’s family-powered.

Three generations of the Dunn family have worked side by side to keep SunLife growing strong. Sharon serves as President, Dave as Vice President, and John continues to lend his experience, advice, and trademark sense of humor.  Charles (Sharon’s husband) & Kayla (Dave’s wife) are onboard, too! And then there’s the third generation – Sharon & Charles’ sons Connor and Gavin. Connor is taking on Sunroom Operations, Gavin is now helping on the Spa crew, and you may recognize both Connor & Gavin as our famous little spokespersons from TV and radio, shouting, “You’ve got to SEE this place!”

But our “family” doesn’t stop there. Many of our employees have been with us for 10, 20, even 40 years.

• Tony, our lead service technician, has been part of the SunLife Sunrooms, Spas & More family for more than 40 years and has previously been named the #1 Hot Spring Spa Technician in the country.
• Charles & Sharon have been with the company since 1996.
• Jack has been building Sunrooms with SunLife Sunrooms, Spas & More for over 30 years.
• Teresa and Kevin recently retired after 25 years with us and Joe after 32 years.
• Andy heads our Sunroom & Screen Room crews with more than two decades of experience, and is a fixture of reliability and skill.
• Our extended SunLife team now includes more than 20 hardworking, dedicated employees – all committed to delivering exceptional craftsmanship and customer care.
